As the role of the school business professional continues to develop, it’s worth reflecting upon the fact that you won’t be able to do everything effectively yourself.

Adding value

Delegation is one of the key skills in your entrepreneurial toolbox. Here’s a refresher on five steps to delegating income-generation tasks.

  1. Clearly articulate the desired outcome and the lines of authority. Begin with the end in mind and specify the desired results but let colleagues know where to go with issues.
  2. Empower colleagues to decide exactly which tasks are to be delegated to them. They will take greater ownership. Understand that you can delegate responsibility but accountability stays with you.
  3. Delegate to colleagues who have the most knowledge of the detail required to complete the task. Provide adequate support, and be available to answer questions. Provide recognition when deserved.
  4. Focus on results. Your way is not necessarily the best way. Allow colleagues to control their own methods and processes as this facilitates trust and success.
  5. If there is a problem, don’t allow responsibility of the task to be shifted back to you. Establish and maintain control by discussing and agreeing timelines and deadlines.
