Adding value

Using data as evidence

Capita SIMS, Head of School Improvement, Philippa Wilding, and Trainee Ofsted Inspector, Steve Long, share their knowledge and tips on how to deliver lessons that will impress not only the pupils but the Ofsted inspector, too.

  • By using performance data to inform your lesson planning, you’ll be demonstrating to any observer that you have considered and responded to the needs of specific groups as well as of individuals:
  • Use pupil performance data (on School Information Management System (SIMS) mark sheets or otherwise) and differentiation when planning lessons to ensure that all pupils are able to make good progress.
  • Be aware of the progress not only of individuals but also of key groups by analysing pupil performance data. If you’ve asked the Capita SIMS school improvement team to develop your school’s improvement programme, this is where you would use the SIMS data analysis toolkit they provide for instant progress updates at each assessment point.
  • Produce a single sheet of attainment and progress data and attach it to your lesson plan to give to an inspector when s/he enters the classroom to carry out an observation.
