ASCL Council is made up of 148 elected representatives and is the association’s policymaking body, meeting four times a year. Council members represent ASCL at meetings with government officials and other organisations. It is from Council that national officers, including the president, are elected. In each edition of Leader this year, we will spotlight the work of a particular committee of Council. This month, it is the turn of the Pay and Conditions Committee. More

Understanding performance

Understanding the performance profile of your staff is a critical aspect of effective school leadership. School leaders know that gauging performance is about more than lesson observations; work scrutiny, learning walks and pupil voice all contribute to the picture of ‘totality’ and typicality’ of performance. Inspectors will be looking to see that your measures of performance match the evidence they gather. Supporting effective staff engagement is critical in any school and should include:

  • consulting with staff on the measurements of expectations of performance
  • establishing a shared understanding of unambiguous evidence
  • the use of consistent, transparent and equitable systems

Outstanding leaders ensure that performance management is rigorous and that underperformance is addressed through professional development that is supportive and challenging. Inspectors will scrutinise the performance of staff and their pay position. Having an accurate, live and comprehensive picture of the performance of your staff that is understood by them is a ‘must’ for all strong leadership teams.
